To celebrate the New Year in China, every place has its own customs. For example, dumplings are often eaten in the north cities, and glutinous rice balls are often eaten in the south cities. But generally there will be some common customs, for example,
1. Buy new year goods. Every Chinese New Year, people will always buy some food, drink, and use stuff for the New Year, in order to make the Spring Festival colorful. These New Year’s goods include those for own use and those for entertaining guests. Visiting relatives and friends during the New Year is definitely indispensable, so preparing New Year’s goods has become something that every household must prepare.
2. Post Spring Festival couplets. Spring Festival couplets imply good wishes. The day before the Spring Festival, every household will stick the bought Spring Festival couplets on the gate.
3. Eat dumplings. There is a custom in northern China that during festivals, when welcoming relatives and friends, they always make dumplings to eat. Dumplings are not only a delicacy in China, but also contain the culture of the Chinese nation, expressing people’s yearning and demands for a better life.
4. Flower viewing lights. Appreciating lanterns is an ancient Chinese folk culture. Activities are usually held during the Lantern Festival. People can see various lanterns walking on the street.
5. Dragon dance. Dragon dance is also called playing dragon lantern or dragon lantern dance. It has become a custom all over the country to pray for peace and a good harvest by dancing the dragon.
